Important achievements are celebrated at Culatra Island on it transition pathways. The CULATRA2030 transition team takes the first steps in its environmental sustainability and energy transition with the approval of the project “Decarbonisation of Aquaculture Activity”.

The project was submitted by the Culatra Island Residents Association to MAR2020, a Sea Operational Funding Program from the EU Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

This project will equip the fishing sheds with solar panels, install a solar boat charging station at the fishing harbour and equip the Association and two residents with solar boats. This is an important step for decarbonising the main economic activity of the islanders in the transition from combustion engines to electric-solar vessels, reducing pollution and the emission of greenhouse gases. It will also allow to create zero carbon fishing products, valuing Culatra’ fishing produce and contributing to the environmental sustainability of the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
