The University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) joins the Race to Zero campaign, an initiative that aims to establish an international alliance to promote change towards a decarbonised economy.
In the coming months, the UIB will draw up a plan to achieve climate neutrality by 2030. It will focus on aspects such as the promotion of sustainable mobility and the modernisation and improvement of energy efficiency in buildings and facilities on campus based on criteria of sustainability, reduction of the ecological footprint and energy sufficiency. The UIB already has 800 sensors distributed across the campus, which allow monitoring of many indicators associated with sustainability.
The plan is in line with the UIB's commitment to the preservation of the environment, which has been reinforced with the adhesion to the international Race to Zero campaign, approved by the Board of Directors on Wednesday 27 October. In this way, the UIB becomes the first institution in the Balearic Islands to endorse the commitment to climate neutrality.
Race to Zero is a United Nations-backed initiative that brings together non-state actors (including businesses, cities, regions, financial, educational and health institutions) to take rigorous and immediate action to halve global emissions by 2030 and deliver a carbon-free, healthier and fairer world.
All members are committed to the same overarching goal: to reduce emissions across the board quickly and fairly in line with the Paris Agreement, with transparent action plans and robust near-term targets.
More than a thousand higher education institutions around the world, representing almost 10 million students, have already signed up for the Race to Zero campaign.
